When graphic design is done properly it’s easy to see. When not, there’s just something missing.  We all know that.

But any kind of art or graphic design is actually in the eye of the beholder.

No brand or website design will appeal to all people.  But there are few easy things that all good designs have in common.

Create a Uniform Theme in your Asheville Graphic Design

All your pages or different properties like your webpage, your facebook, twitter and youtube page should have a similar appearance and feel.

This implies they should “flow” and be consistent and recognizable from site to site.

Use Uniform Colors

I cannot help but think of the colors of college or pro sports teams. When you think of certain colors you may think about certain teams.

For instance, if you live in the south and you’re a college football fan, you just know that garnet and black are for the University of South Carolina.   Clemson, and Tennessee are associated with orange. Even different colors of orange.

All you have to do is look up in the stands and see the wave of team colors to understand how much people associate with certain colors

Certain businesses do the same. Here’s a really easy example.  When you think about UPS, do you not think of dark brown?

None of these teams or businesses would ever think of changing their colors. Pick a color or group of colors and stick with them.

Make it Simple

You’ve heard that a million times, right?  That is because its true! Rather more so in graphic design. Look at your favorite designs.

The best ones are typically the easiest to remember and the most simple.  For me, the Nike Swoosh comes to mind.  I’ll bet it did for you, also.

Realize your designs also will be observed from different directions, on different sorts of media and potentially in 3-D.

To picture this, see your logo on T-Shirts, pens, outdoor signs, autos, ad specialty items, for example.

If you logo can maintain its style and shape on those things, you’re probably fine.

But if say you wish to have some very good shirts embroidered, remember that letters have to be sufficiently large to sew.

Just make sure you tell your designer that your artwork will be used on a variety of items and to be certain they will fit.

How to select a graphic designer

asheville graphic designAsk to see 1 or 2 samples of their work to make certain you like their type of design.

You must feel at ease dealing with them . This is critical. Although most graphic designers are very good at design, many lack business experience and the ability to communicate as a business person.

The picture to the left is an actual example of what some graphic artist delivered for a resume.

OK, I realize they were trying to be unique and for some projects that would be worthwhile, but I want a graphic designer who is creative but not “out there”

Ask some simple questions to see if they can talk with you as a business person or to a satisfactory level.

One you decide, most designers will give you one or two options of your artwork and be willing to make refinements until you are satisfied.

Once completed, the very next step is to show off your new found creation to your friends!

I hope this helps you in your process of choosing a designer.

See ya next time and enjoy your new artwork!
